ChatGPT File Upload Limits Explained (and How to Work Around Them)

What ChatGPT's file size, token, and page limits actually mean in practice, and how to shrink documents so the model reads every word.

File size is not the real limit

Most people hit a wall long before the upload size cap. The real constraint is the context window: the number of tokens the model can keep in view at once. A 30 MB PDF with large images may contain only 20,000 tokens of text, while a 2 MB text dump can exceed 500,000.

When a file is too large, ChatGPT falls back to retrieval: it searches your document and only shows the model the passages it thinks matter. Good for lookups, bad for summaries and cross-referencing.

A three-step workaround

Treat the upload as a text-preparation problem instead of a file problem.

  • Extract clean text with PDF to Clean Text so headers, footers and page numbers stop wasting tokens.
  • Measure the result in the Token Counter to see exactly how close you are to the limit.
  • If you are still over, run the text through the Context Compressor to remove filler and duplicated lines.

When to split instead of compress

If a document is several times larger than the context window, split it by chapter or section, ask for a summary of each part, then ask ChatGPT to synthesize the summaries. This keeps every section inside the model's attention instead of hoping retrieval finds it.

  • PDF to Clean Text — Strips headers, footers, page numbers, and hyphenation. Outputs TXT or Markdown.
  • Context Compressor — Reduce token usage with compression strategies tuned for LLMs.
  • Token Counter — Live token, character, and context-window meter for any prompt. Uses official tiktoken encoders.

Frequently asked

Why does ChatGPT ignore parts of my file?

Uploaded files are chunked and retrieved, not read in full. If the document is bigger than the context window, only the most relevant chunks reach the model.

How do I know if my file fits?

Paste the extracted text into a token counter. If it is well under the model's context window, the model can read it in one pass.
